The Most Common Dental Emergencies (and What to Do)

painful-jaw-sq-300 (4)Dental emergencies can happen to anyone—whether it’s a chipped tooth at lunch, a sudden toothache at night, or a lost filling that leaves your tooth feeling sensitive. Knowing what to do in these situations can help protect your smile and prevent further damage. Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we see at The Smile Factory, and the steps to take before your appointment.

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth might not always cause pain, but it’s important to get it checked as soon as possible. Sharp edges can irritate your tongue or cheek, and the exposed area may become more vulnerable to decay. Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep it clean, and if there’s any sensitivity, avoid very hot or cold foods. Bring any broken pieces of the tooth with you to your appointment.

Broken Tooth

A broken or cracked tooth is more serious and may cause pain, swelling, or bleeding. Rinse gently with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If possible, keep any pieces in milk or saline and bring them along. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until your dentist has repaired the damage.

Lost Fillings

Fillings can sometimes loosen or fall out, leaving the tooth exposed and sensitive. If this happens, avoid eating on that side and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. You can use a temporary dental repair material from a pharmacy if necessary, but it’s best to see your dentist as soon as possible to properly restore the tooth.

Toothache

A persistent toothache is often a sign of infection or decay that needs prompt attention. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, floss gently to remove any trapped food, and apply a cold compress for relief. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum—it can cause irritation.
