What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them—during a family meal, a weekend sport, or even while brushing your teeth. Knowing what to do can make all the difference in saving a tooth and easing discomfort before you reach the dentist.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation where you’re experiencing severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or damage to your teeth or gums that needs immediate care. This can include:

  • A knocked-out or broken tooth
  • A loose crown or filling causing discomfort
  • A severe toothache or swelling in the jaw or gums
  • Trauma to the mouth or jaw

If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, it’s best to call your dentist. Acting quickly can help prevent complications and preserve your smile.

Steps to Take Right Away

1. Stay calm and assess the situation.
Panicking can make things worse. Take a deep breath and gently rinse your mouth with warm water to remove any debris.

2. For a knocked-out tooth:
Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (the white part), not the root. If possible, gently place it back into the socket. If that’s not an option, store it in a small container of milk or saline and bring it with you to the dentist. The sooner you’re seen—ideally within 30 minutes—the better the chances of saving the tooth.

3. For a cracked or broken tooth:
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any pieces of the tooth if possible.

4. For toothache or swelling:
Rinse with salt water and use a cold pack on your cheek. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum—it can cause irritation.
