Tooth Extractions at The Smile Factory

At The Smile Factory, we believe extraction should always be a last resort as treatment. In some cases, removing a tooth is the only option to prevent a patient from further pain, suffering, and infection.

Our dental team isn’t just highly-experienced with this procedure, but they also understand the gentle and caring approach needed when performing a dental extraction.

When Does a Tooth Need to Be Removed?

There are many reasons why a dentist may suggest extraction of your problematic tooth. These include:

  • Infection
  • Injury (such as breakage or fractures)
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Malformed teeth
  • Excessive decay
  • Severe gum disease
  • In preparation of a prosthetic
  • In preparation of orthodontic treatment (i.e. braces)

The Extraction Process: What to Expect

Once our dentist has thoroughly examined the site of the tooth and determined that extraction is necessary, local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area. While many dental extractions are completed in-chair within our practice, more complex cases are performed under general anaesthesia at hospital.

When the site of the tooth is completely numb, our dentist will use an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth, followed by forceps to remove the tooth. For more complex cases (such as wisdom tooth removal or extraction of a tooth which has not erupted through the gum), the oral surgeon will make a small incision into your gum to surgically remove the tooth.

Our oral health care professionals may provide you with pain relief medication or antibiotics to assist with the healing process. Generally, patients feel much better within 24 hours after their extraction, with many being able to resume their normal eating and drinking habits within 1-2 days.
